Ice thickness may vary within a small area

New (black) ice is stronger than old (milky) ice

Ice closer to shore is weaker than ice farther out

Obstructions i.e., rocks, logs, and plants, weaken ice

Underground springs weaken ice
·       
Waterfowl and schools of fish prevent ice formation
·       
Water currents weaken ice
·       
Ice covered by snow and/or water weakens the ice.
